History Lessons: Bigfoot, the Viceroyalty and the Natives of Nootka

History Lessons: Bigfoot, The Viceroyalty and the Natives of Nootka
By Scott Corrales (c) 2013

During the 18th century, exploration of "la Alta California" (Upper California) pushed northward beyond the deserts and forests of the San Francisco Mission and into the virgin forests of the modern states of Oregon and Washington - lands lacking gold or readily accessible mineral wealth, but whose waters attracted the otters that stirred the interest of Russian settlers in Alaska. As they sailed southward in search of their prize, they came into conflict with the forces of the viceroyalty of New Spain.

In 1774, captain Bruno de Esceta reached the inlet known as Mowichat by members of the nuu-cha-nulth tribe. While no landings took place, the local inhabitants approached the Spanish frigate with handsome animal pelts, seeking to trade them for Californian mother of pearl. The mission assigned to Captain Esceta and his vessel, the "Santiago", was to ascertain that trade was indeed taking place between the natives and the Russian mariners. Measures would be taken to defend the Crown's monopoly over those distant waters, but bad weather and the dreadful scurvy tormenting his crew kept the Spanish officer from sailing north and expelling the Russians from their settlement.

Another world power - England - would also find itself involved in the area following a visit to modern Vancouver Island by Captain James Cook in 1778, and this intrepid voyager would have the honor of bestowing the name "Nootka" upon the inlet. The British presence in those waters continued the challenge against the Spanish affirmation of possession of those lands under the Treaty of Tordesillas, which partitioned the world between Spain and Portugal in the 15th century. The geopolitical uncertainties of the 18th century could fill many pages, but there exists one particular expedition that concerns those interested in old mysteries, particularly of a cryptozoological nature.

In 1792, Juan Vicente Guemes, Count of Revillagigedo, Viceroy of New Spain, decreed that a scientific mission should be sent to the northern Pacific coast: not to challenge the Russian whalers and hunters, but to compile an extensive ethnography on the inhabitants of those distant lands and a catalogue of the surrounding flora and fauna. The expedition, officially called the "Expedición de Límites al Norte de California" (Expedition of the Borderlands North of California)would include naturalist Jose Mariano Moziño Suárez de Figueroa, born in Temscaltepec, Mexico, whose writings on the culture of the nuu-cha-nulth would appear in the document known as "Noticias de Nutka" (News from Nootka, currently kept at Yale University's Beineke Library.

It is believed that the first mention of the controversial creature known as Sasquatch or Bigfoot appears in this 18th century scientific work: Pages thirty-four to thirty-five of "Noticias de Nutka" include remarks by Moziño Suárez concerning an unusual beast given the name "matlog".

("I do not know what to say about a matlog, a resident of the mountains, who fills everyone with unspeakable dread. They describe it as having a monstrous body, covered in all manner of rigid black bristles, with a head similar to a human's bu with larger, sharper and stronger fangs than a bear's, very long arms, with its fingers and toes armed with long and curved claws. Its screams alone - they say - can topple anyone who hears them, and it can shatter any unfortunate body into a thousand pieces in a single blow. I presume that the history of the matlog has the same basis as the creation myth of which I have just spoken, or that members of the tribe received word long ago that these entities owe their existence to demons [...]) [translation by SC]

Moziño's writings languished in oblivion unitl 1913, when they were translated into English by Iris Wilson. This translation would appear in a work by early researchers of the Sasquatch mystery - Don Hunter and René Dahinden - in the prologue to their classic book Sasquatch (NY: Signet Books, 1975).

Paleontologists and other academics believe the answer to the Sasquatch enigma can be found in the existence of the Gigantopithecus - a creature that may migrated to the Americas from Asia - or some variant of this exinct genus of ape. Could the "matlog" described by the natives of Nootka be one of them?

PERU: Residents of Iquitos Photograph Strange Object

Two residents of the “9 de Abril” settlement in the San Juan Bautista district (Iquitos) reported seeing a UFO in the early morning hours of this day. Daniel Chota Tamani, 30, explained that while speaking to his son, Luis C.G., 14, an incandescent light appeared in the sky, moving oddly and giving off beams of light. The phenomenon was recorded at around 2 o’clock in the morning.

According to Chota Tamani, upon seeing what he took for a spacecraft, he managed to record the incandescent light – which was only a few feet overhead - with his cellphone. “We returned to my house and watched as the UFO moved from one place to another, projecting something like a ray around it. We wanted to notify our neighbors, but we couldn’t say a word. Later on, it vanished,” he said.

The images they manage to record show the unidentified flying object moving in various ways. Both settlers likewise manifested the belief that this luminous phenomenon is an omen of the end of the world, and that they now believe in extraterrestrials.

Argentina: Two Agronomists Photographed UFO Over Santiago Field

The two men were conducting a land survey when they discovered that one of their photos of the sky, pointing northward, did not resemble a bird or a plane, but an inverted dish.

SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO, 25 Apr (NA) – Two agronomists claim having photographed a UFO while conducting a survey of a field near Pampa Múyoj in Santiago del Estero.
Antonio Pappalardo and Roberto Aguila were startled when they returned to the office to look over the photographs that constitute their work, performed in the middle of siesta time.

“We came to do a survey and took a series of photos to convey the visual information and analyze it back at the office. At around three o’clock in the afternoon, without looking through the viewfinder, I took some photos with my (cellphone) camera but without noticing anything strange. I submitted them to my boss, who noticed there was something odd , looking like an unidentified flying object,” one of the surveyors told the Diario Panorama newspaper.

The cellphone photo was taken from a moving pickup truck by the driver himself, holding the cellphone over his companion, who happened to be his boss.

Another photo of the landscape was taken once the agronomists descended from their vehicle, although the object appeared in the initial photo, so it can be inferred that it was in motion.

“I wanted to see the job done, and when I noticed the object in the distance looked like an unidentified flying object (UFO), like a flying saucer, I couldn’t believe it.

I enlarged it using the computer’s zoom function, and noticed that it was a completely solid object,” explained the engineer who took the photo.

“Due to the likelihood that it could have been a cloud, for instance, I looked at another photo, taken in a time interval of one minute, and it was no longer there. This showed that it couldn’t be a cloud, as it vanished too quickly,” he added.
After passing the photo to his superiors, and analyzing that something unusual was in it, the agronomist says that it changed his outlook on the existence of abnormal objects in the sky.

“Up to now, the truth is I’d never believed [in such things], but seeing this photo, it seems that there is something to it. We were very surprised,” he concluded.

Argentina: “Sections of Santiago del Estero Attract UFOs”

Statement by renowned researcher Fabio Zerpa, confirming that a UFO was indeed seen over Pampa Múyoj
Photo of sighting taken by two researchers who photographed the sky, not knowing object was there.

04.27.2013 – Following the startling manifestation of an Unidentified Flying Object over Pampa Múyoj and a new photograph taken by a resident of the Almirante Brown neighborhood, suggesting the possible presence of an unknown object, renowned parapsychologist, ufologist and historian Fabio Zerpa confirmed the theory put forth by other specialists, stating that the object that flew over the skies of Santiago [del Estero] is indeed a UFO.

“What flew over Santiago [del Estero] is in fact a UFO, but it is nothing new in that province, much less in the world. More cases are taking place now and reports on unidentified flying objects are circulated because people have lost the fear of being ridiculed. This makes the witness – the backbone of research – to feel encouraged to speak out and expedite the work to be done,” explained Zerpa.

Fabio Zerpa also referred to parts of the world that attract these objects, and our province is one of them.

“There are places with magnetic fields and “force triangles” where these objects are more readily seen. Santiago is among them, particularly the area of Frías, Córdoba, Catamarca [as well as] in Chile and Spain. But we also realize that UFOs are seen in all regions of the world,” he added.

The ufologist also highlighted the fact that technological progress has been a positive influence in capturing these objects.

“Since 1975, when I began researching invisible UFOs, the ones that the human eye is unable to see, but can be picked up by a photo camera with greater viewing capabilities. There are three fundamental points when it comes to capturing a UFO: the witness, the technology, and the changes and transformations of humanity itself, with unidentified flying objects manifesting themselves even more to increase the expectations of a future contact with extraterrestrials.”
Finally, he stated that these sightings shall continue occurring more and more as time goes on.

“UFOs shall be seen more frequently, and Santiago [del Estero] is among the chosen sites, as they descend in areas with low population density, and the province has these characteristics,” he concluded.

Gathering Evidence from Unknown Entity in Puerto Rico

Members of José Pérez's research team retrieving samples of blood and hair left behind by the unknown entity that killed a goat on the property of Rafael ("Tigre") Flores.

Puerto Rico: Chupacabras - The Night Siege

[Chupacabras activity in Puerto Rico is reaching levels not seen for well over a decade. As occurred in the mid-1990s, a number of different "entities" appear to be at work in the situation -- large avian beings, winged vulpine predators and shadowy indefinite creatures, a situation that replayed itself in Chile during the 2000-2001 mutilation wave. INEXPLICATA thanks José Pérez and his team for providing us this information firsthand -- SC]

Puerto Rico: Chupacabras – The Night Siege

Video at:

On the morning of 18 April 2013, before leaving for my job, I checked the voice messages on my cellphone and came across a call from Mr. Angel Joel Soto, owner of the mare “Lucero”, victim of an attack by a strange creature in late January – an attack that it miraculously survived.

Upon hearing the message, I noticed that the excitement in Mr. Soto’s voice as he said: “Don José, the creature attacked again last night. The person who saw it caught it attacking a goat. That thing took off running and leaped over a really tall fence, vanishing into the brush. The goat is here with wounds to its neck and other parts of the body. You’ve got to come and take a look at this. That thing got entangled in the concertina wire, cut itself and left hair stuck to the barbs.”
I called him back immediately and he gave me some preliminary information, but told me he was off to investigate it. He phoned about half an hour later, putting Mr. Rafael Flores – known to his friends as “Tigre” – on the phone.

Don Rafael began telling me the incredible tale I will share with you below.

On Saturday, 20 April 2013, the research team formed by José Pérez, Ilbis Domínguez, Luissepi Quiñones, José A. Martínez, Aníbal Martínez and Richard Flrores paid a visit to Mr. Flores’ farm for an interview. This was after interviewing Mr. Fernando Díaz, the person whose car collided with a strange creature back in March. Mr. Flores (“Tigre”) told us the following:

“For some two or three weeks now, my animals have been turning up dead in a mysterious way. First it was the chickens, then ten rabbits, five ducklings and finally two lambs. All of them showed perforations near the neck and on various parts of the body. Whatever was killing them broke their cages.

“On Thursday, 18 April 2013 at around 9:00 p.m., I headed to the farm to make sure everything was ok was the animals. As I approached the stable where I keep my horses, I saw them running around, frightened, as though fleeing from something.

“I grabbed my flashlight and went to the pen, opened the door and immediately noticed that the wooden cage in which I kept my last remaining goat was opened. I suddenly heard a sound and when I pointed the flashlight to see what it was, I saw the goat stirring on the ground. I called to my wife: “The goat’s injured!” I got closer and that’s when I saw a dark figure near my goat, which was motionless on the ground. All I could make out was a crouched figure, black with shiny black eyes (possible flashlight reflection).

“When that thing saw me, it took off running toward the fence in the back of the pen. The fence is approximately nine feet tall, and has a concertina type razor wire on top of it. That thing ran quickly. Just as it faced the fence, it got ready to leap with its hind legs, taking an incredible flying leap to reach the other side. As it did so, it was momentarily entangled in the concertina wire, cutting its skin and leaving hair on the wire.

“Once it reached the other side, it ran to the left of the fence, plunged into the brush and vanished. To tell you the truth, I don’t know who was more frightened – that thing or I. That night I quit being “Tigre” for a while (humorous remark). That was definitely not a dog. I didn’t see any wings on it or anything.
“The little goat was my son’s pet. He even called her “Li” after his grandmother, whose name is Lili.”

When our research team visited the site the following Saturday, we could examine the goat’s carcass. The night on which the events occurred, all it had was a laceration on its neck and some perforations near its genitals, but when we examined it, the animal’s head was twisted and it seemed as though its neck area had been enlarged further, and its mouth was open. We had the impression that the creature had returned during the night to finish the job.

We examined the entire area but didn’t find any prints. We did, however, take samples of the blood and hair of the animal that was left on the concertina wire. These samples of genetic material have been submitted to a laboratory for analysis. We will keep you apprised of the results.

The most curious item of information was that when the creature leaped, it did not take a running leap. It simply stopped in front of the fence and took a nine-foot jump on its hind legs. We are not aware of any animal known to man that is able to do such a thing.

Mr. Flores told us the thing had no wings, and when it ran, it did so on four legs, although sometimes standing on two legs. He was unable to make out facial features. At no time did the creature fly away, which makes us wonder that we are perhaps dealing with a different creature from the one seen by Mr. Fernando Díaz, which had bat-like wings.

This is impressive, as it would seem there are several types of creatures on the loose in the sector. What is going on? This is a mystery, but we shall continue to work until we gain a clearer picture of the matter, or until the truth finally becomes known.

Puerto Rico: Chupacabras - Sudden Impact

Chupacabras: Sudden Impact
By José Pérez – PRMUFON

On Saturday, 20 April 2013, a team of researchers consisting of this author, José Pérez, his wife Ilbis Dominguez, Mr. Luissepi Quiñones, Mr. José A. Martinez, Mr. Anibal Martínez and Mr. Richard Flores reported to the residence of Mr. Fernando Díaz to interview him about the impressive and highly important case which we will endeavor to narrate briefly in this article as follows…

In the early hours of 30 March 2013 at around 6:15 a.m., Mr. Fernando Díaz, a resident of the town of Guayama, Puerto Rico, was headed to work as usual. Mr. Díaz was driving along PR-3, one of the island’s main thoroughfares. The sky was light at that time of the morning, although the sun was not fully out yet.
Mr. Diaz was driving his blue 2001 Hyundai Brio at an approximate speed of 35 miles per hour, heading from the town of Guayama to the town of Salinas.

As he approached kilometer 3.0, right in front of the facilities of the División de Tránsito y Vehículos Hurtados (Traffic and Stolen Vehicles Division) of the Guayama State Police, he noticed that the vehicle ahead of him began zigzagging, as if trying to avoid something.

When he looked, he could see something strange coming over the vehicle – something he had never seen before. It was an enormous, dark-winged figure that appeared to have collided against the vehicle in front of him, and was trying to stand up in an effort to take flight. His first impression was that it was a gigantic bird.
The creature never had enough time to get up off the ground and struck the grille of Mr. Díaz’s car head-on. With the same momentum, it continued sliding along the vehicle’s hood until it struck the windshield, continuing to slide off the hood.

Mr. Diaz stepped on the brake, terrified at the sight, and brought his vehicle to a sudden halt. Luckily there were no cars behind him. After stopping, he looked through the rear-view mirror to see exactly what he had hit, but was unable to see anything.

Although the event lasted only seconds, Mr. Díaz was able to take in considerable details of the creature that hit his car.

According to his description, the creature had a broad face like a Pitbull terrier. It had a short snout and nose resembling that of a dog. Its eyes were small, human-sized, but completely dark and glossy. It had something like ears on either side of its head. It had no feathers; its skin was like a bat’s and although he thinks it may have had hair, it was short and smooth along the body.

The creature was black or dark brown in color, and seemed to have arms aside from wings – that is to say, it had six extremities: two legs, two arms and two wings. Its feet appeared to have multiple toes with claws, and its extended wings resembled those of a bat.

Mr. Díaz noted that the wings appeared to stretch out from two to three feet on either side of his vehicle. A 2001 Hyundai Brio measures exactly 5 feet and 8 inches wide, meaning that if we round it off to 6 feet and add a minimum of two additional feet to each side, we would be talking of a creature whose wingspan was 10 feet from wingtip to wingtip.

Mr. Díaz admitted to us that the first thing that came to his mind was that he had seen the Devil.

Despite his fear, he could see that the vehicle ahead of him was pulling into a Gulf station some 400 meters ahead on the right side of the road.

Once there, he saw the driver of the other vehicle – a white Toyota Corolla – stepping out. Excitedly, Mr. Díaz asked him: “Did you see that?!”

Both drivers spent a few minutes discussing the awful experience, but since they had to reach their respective workplaces, decided to continue their journeys. They decided not to make a formal complaint to the police, since they were certain no one was going to believe them and would probably consider it a joke, and mock them.
Mr. Díaz told his co-workers about the event and one of them accompanied him back to the site at around 10:00 a.m. to see if they could find the thing that hit his vehicle, but there were no traces to be found.

Although Mr. Díaz has been very kind and cooperated with us in our investigation, the driver of the other car does not want his name made public, at least for now. We hope he changes his mind soon in order to lend further credence to this significant case.
Mr. Díaz knows Ms. Felicitas Cintrón, who reported seeing a similar creature in 2012, and when sharing their experiences, agreed that they were definitely talking about the same entity.

Luckily for Mr. Díaz (but not for us in our evidence-gathering endeavors) his vehicle suffered no damage whatsoever aside from some scratches to the paint. The bodywork was not dented and the windshield did not shatter.

We would like to express our thanks to Mr. José Oscar Martínez and Ms. Felicitas Cintrón, who informed us about this case, and especially Mr. Fernando Díaz for having welcomed us into his home and bravely recounted his terrible experience, allowing us to share it with the public.

In my opinion, this could be one of the most significant cases in explaining the mystery that surrounds the mutilation of animals by creatures of unknown origin.
We shall continue our investigations until the day that those who know the truth – and we are certain that they do - choose to make it public.

Puerto Rico: A New Spree of Chupacabras Attacks in Guayama

Puerto Rico: A New Spree of Chupacabras Attacks in Guayama
By José Pérez, PRMUFON

José Pérez is a field researcher with a wide range of unpublished experiences in Puerto Rican ufology. He collaborated with the defunct ENIGMAS magazine for many years with researcher/journalist Jorge Martin.

During the first week of April 2013, Mr. Rey D. Rodríguez – better known as “Chaka” to his friends – was rounding up cattle to bring them back to their barn, assisted by his nephew in this operation.

They were driving along in a pickup truck, lighting up the sections where they tended to look for their cows. Night had already fallen (it was a clear night, possible full moon) and they carried with them a powerful LED flashlight that made it easier to locate the animals.

Upon reaching the Medianía sector, which currently has as field for playing “Gotcha”, they were able to see something akin to the red reflection a little “eye” moving in the distance in the lights of their pickup truck. They immediately said: “Look, there’s one!”

They drove the pickup all the way to the end of the target range, trying to find the alleged cow, but they found nothing. They remained some additional time at the spot to see if anything turned up, but nothing did.

When they decided to leave, they turned the pickup truck around to keep tracking down their herd, but they drove past a sector where the reflection of the little red “eye” became evident again, dashing through the shrub vegetation.

“Chaka” immediately hollered: “Stop right there! Look at that!”

They stopped the pickup truck and looking over a small mound of earth, the saw a dark figure resembling a short-statured man who appeared to be crouching. Chaka reached for his flashlight, got out of the vehicle and pointed it at the figure. He was only able to make out the glow of a single eye; we are uncertain if this was due to tis position. It had a yellowish or bright orange color that gradually diminished in brightness. He also noticed the figure had something strange on its head and back, resembling quills.

“Give me the machete, the machete!” Chaka demanded of his nephew. Wielding the weapon, he approached the thing he was seeing.
As he approached, the thing leaped and ran toward the undergrowth. Chaka then launched into a chase of the creature, calling out to his nephew at the same time to help, causing him to join the pursuit (Note: These are very bold and brave fellows. I would have been running too, but in a homeward direction).

The animal or “whatever it was” proved to be extremely swift, running parallel to a barbed wire fence. Chaka was on its heels, but the creature had the advantage. When the creature came to a fence, it leaped over it while Chaka burrowed under it, continuing the chase for a long stretch (Note: I subsequently accompanied him and was tired out by just walking). The creature kept running toward a very large tree. Just as Chaka was about to reach it…it vanished. He asked me if the creature was able to fly, as he cannot find an explanation to what occurred.

A week later, in the same sector, the creature attacked two mares and slaughtered two calves, which we will discuss in this article’s continuation.

Peru: The "Ribbon of Holes"

Contributing Editor Guillermo D. Gimenez has posted a photo of one of the most unusual formation in Latin America: The "Banda de Agujeros" (literally, the "ribbon of holes") near the Peruvian valley of Pisco, on the plain of Cajarmarquilla. Thousands of man-sized holes were drilled into rock at some unknown period in the past, covering over a mile of terrain. Archaeologists have speculated that these structures functioned as granaries - an unlikely possibility - as some of them are shallow while others plunge to depths of seventy-five feet. -- SC.

Cattle Mutilations: Commotion over Animal Attack in Pellegrini, Santiago del Estero

Residents found young goats with incisions, without organs and entrails, and with no traces of blood in the area. No reliable explanation has been found.

Interior. In recent days, residents of the provincial interior have been shocked by two cases involving animal mutilations that ocurred in remote localities, but having similar characteristics.

The first event took place in the Quebrada Esquina wilderness, department of Pellegrini, where a family of farmers found a small goat mutilated in its pen. The animal presented a perfect incision around its tail, through which organs and entrails were extracted.

The strange event took place in a community of peasant families some 13 kilometers away from Nueva Esperanza. The animal was found by Gerardo Villagrán and Nilda Ruiz, small livestock farmers, who headed for the pens, as is their custom to feed the young kids. They were shocked to find a 20-day-old kid dead from an incision under its tail, its organs and entrails missing along with the bones in its head. Its hide was intact -- a constant feature of these cases -- and there was no blood to be found.

The news spread throughout the settlement and many came to see the Villagrán's animal in its pen. All agreed that there is no predatory animal in the area to whom the event could be ascribed, and this was a source of concern to the community, which cannot find an answer or explanation to the situation.

In Quimlí

The second case occurred in Quimlí on Saturday morning, when according to locals, a "strange being" appeared during the night and mutilated an animal. Citizens of Quimlí are stil amazed by the bizarre situation they experienced upon discovering an animal carcass with unusual incisions and mutilations, yet without a single drop of blood in evidence.

According to reports from Ruben Dominguez, he arrived on Saturday with his work team from the Mobile Health Unit attached to the city's Ministry of Health. A group of local residents described hearing odd sounds during the night, which they associated with the presence of the [legendary] Almamula.

Furthermore, they added that their hypothesis was confirmed by the discovery - fifty meters away from the city's CIC, of the carcass of a six-month-old cold with strange incisions to its neck, muzzle, breast and tail. Beyond the wounds, the locals were astonished by the fact that signs of a struggle between animals were present, yet without any blood.

Many curiosity seekers visited the site, yet no one was able to ascertain what had taken place.

Argentina: Cattle Mutilations in Santiago del Estero

A cattle rancher from Paraje San Miguel, located in the interior of the Quebrachos department, made known the discovery of mutilated cows.

Technical Information:
Place: Paraje San Miguel, Department of Quebrachos
Location: 2 kilometers from the farmhouse
Livestock Producer: Aldo Pineda
Number of Animals: 1
Date Reported: 8 April 2013

Type of incision: “Those of us who live in the country and have slaughtered an animal are aware of the difficulty in removing a bovine’s tongue, since it is necessary to perform a series of cuts to its jaw in order to extract it. Those of us who saw the dead cow could not find an explanation as to how it was missing its tongue, eyes, udders and blood.”

It is worth noting animals with similar injuries were found 6 years ago on this very same field.

Chile: Contactee Accused of Damaging Archaeological Site

Chile: Contactee Accused of Damaging Archaeological Site
By Juan Morales – EL DIA – Las Ultimas Noticias
Date: 13 March 2013

Leonardo Codoceo, president of the Centro de Investigacion Ufologica de Atacama said: “What the PDI said about us wanting to build an altar in in a house to see UFOs is a lie. This is what happened.”

“On Sunday I made telepathic contact with UFOs and obtained the information that they would open an energy channel between 11 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon at Cerro La Viña (80 kilometers from Copiapó). A group of 12 people set off, including members of the group and guests who wanted to partake of this cosmic energy.”

“We went by car, but reached the site on foot. This is a very important Pre-Columbian ceremonial center (known as the Centro Metalurgista, declared a National Monument in 1982) and I began connecting myself to the UFOS. When I achieved a mental connection with them, they appeared, and this time their spaceships looked like clouds. That’s when I started the ceremony.”

“I call them Ami, lovingly and with respect. Ami, I’m here to fulfill the planetary project you’ve entrusted to me, I tell them, and then I start distributing energy among those present. At no time did we notice that person, who was a guest, start taking the stones (belonging to ancient ovens made of stone and clay). We only realized this when the detectives turned up in Copiapó, asking for the stones, and that person said: here they are.”

Commissioner Enrique Carvajal, head of the Environmental Crimes Unit of Copiapó, Biedma, reported that this person wanted to build a ceremonial center, apparently to contact UFOs, and that the complaint had been filed by an engineer unrelated to the contactees, who visited the site as a tourist.

Spain: The Enigmatic Disappearance of the "Reina Regente"

Spain: The Enigmatic Disappearance of the “Reina Regente”
By Angel Carretero Olmedo – Andalucia Misteriosa

Both here and at the Andalucia Misteriosa website I’ve spoken of the “Alborán Triangle” and its mysteries, omitting discussion of certain subjects in order to keep the articles from becoming excessively lengthy. Very interesting things have happened between the borders of the aforesaid “triangle” and Province of Cádiz, specifically. The case we are about to discuss is celebrating an anniversary, and we must go more than a century back in time.

The Spanish cruiser “Reina Regente”, built for the Spanish Navy at the Thompson-Clydebank Shipyards, was very advanced for its time, with its armament consisting of individual 240 millimeter guns.

On 9 March 1895, the weather in Cádiz was poor, much like it is these days, with strong winds and rain. In spite of this, Captain Francisco Sanz de Andino, in command of the ship, decided to set sail from Cádiz for Tangiers.

His mission was to return the Sultan of Morocco’s embassy, and he was in a hurry, as he wished to return to port to be present for the launching of another cruiser, the “Charles V”.

Onlookers saw that the ship’s course was erratic as it headed for the Straits of Gibraltar due to the powerful southwesterly winds. It never reached the port of Tangier. A search was organized in the hopes that the ship had found a port to weather the storm. All efforts were abandoned when remains of the ship were found in the beaches of Tarifa and Algeciras.

Nothing more was ever learned about its commander and the 420 members of its crew – or of the Moroccan embassy. It was the greatest tragedy suffered by the Spanish Navy, along with the loss of the “Baleares”. One hundred eighteen years have elapsed since its disappearance. It is one of the mysteries of Cadiz.

Mexico: Paranormal “Shadow Play” in Yucatan
By Jorge Moreno – SIPSE

Today it is our readers’ turn to tell us their paranormal experiences and stories. This time, Mr. Sebastian Pech contacted us about an “evil shadow” that can be seen in such places as Sitpach and Cholul, commissariats of Mérida located right across from each other.

Sebastián says that his uncle, whose name is Marcial Pat, told him that a long time ago his grandfather spoke of “the shadow that chases you”, referring to a shadow that had a life of its own and terrified even the bravest soul, and if that wasn’t enough, it also made sounds.

Our interviewee recalls that many people in both towns suffered from fever and became ill for several days after having seen and been pursued by that strange shadow, which healers said was a “foul air” or “foul wind” that had been left behind in the town. Getting rid of it would prove difficult.

It was said that the shadow could be seen both at noon and at midnight, without distinction, although by day it was easier to avoid it (by standing in places where no shadow was cast). The fact was that it also issued a sound, a hissing similar to that of a rattlesnake.

Yet it is also said that all evils bring their own good fortune, and in this case the fear among the townspeople about avoiding the foul air and becoming ill caused a reduction in the vagabonds and drunkards who normally frequented the town square at night to perform deeds that weren’t exactly decent. They didn't believe it at first, but when they saw what was happening to their fellows, they preferred the safety of their homes to carousing.

Over the years, says Don Marcial, “the shadow that chases you” went away, thanks to the fervent prayers of the local parish priest, they say, although this release prompted the return of the winos – although fewer in number – and a return to the scuffles and donnybrooks caused by excessive drinking.

Don Sebastián, 48, recalls seeing that shadow as a child, but paid it little importance. “Maybe it was because I was little and very innocent. I saw it go by and thought it was something natural. I told my friends and my cousins, but they laughed at me. I saw it just as my uncle described it many years later,” he said.

Little over a year ago, when I visited Sipatch to perform an investigation in its famous “haunted house”, some of the residents spoke to me of the “shadow” case, but there is no evidence or new reports in this regard.

There were reports in Izamal about having seen this shadow in the early years of the past century, and even recently, but it is all anecdotal.
